Empty City Centre Shops to Showcase Local Talent
Creative Exchange: South Yorkshire has been invited by Sheffield Council and the Source Retail Academy to support and publicise the opportunity for artists and creatives to showcase themselves and their products or services in vacant shops in Sheffield City Centre.
The City Council has appointed The Source, a charity that trains window-dressers, to project manage the showcasing of local talent, innovation and creativity amongst other not for profit organisations and charitable activities in the windows of the empty shop units. The Pinstone Street and Cambridge Street area is part of the proposed Sevenstone Retail Quarter being developed by Hammersons, but the development has stalled due to the economic downturn. The recently purchased shop units could have stayed empty and unused for 2 years or more, so the City Council, in partnership with Hammersons and Creative Sheffield, has stepped in to help bring some of these shops and streets back into use. The Source has set up a project base in the former Damart Shop on Pinstone Street and there is an opportunity to showcase events and activities on a video wall on the corner of Furnival Gate. Up to 30 shop windows could be available to use, and the creative sector (e.g: new artists, film makers, fashion designers) are being invited to get involved and submit ideas for inclusion in the themed window displays which are being designed and built by The Source trainees. The first displays were launched on 14th July and will be refreshed every 4-8 weeks. The project aims to showcase innovations, local creative talent and public services, and help to create a more lively and safe environment for visitors and shoppers, whilst preventing the area appearing run down until the Sevenstone development can be continued.
