Hi guys,

We're planning to open a pop-up restaurant in 3 months time (pending availability of our preferred space!) and wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to approach the legal aspects of opening a restaurant on a short term basis - such a food business reg & health and safety, best approach to alcohol licences, what insurance cover we should have etc...we're two relative newbies to the scene (although do have hospitality expereince) and are keen to get a grip on the mechanics now before we go down the wrong path...

Thanks for your help!

I was given a tip-off by on twitter to chat with Bistroteque. Apparently they are old hands at popup restaurants...keen to know how it goes if you do get in touch?

Hi Emily, thanks for the advice - will let you know how we go!

Also, you might want to look at this 'how to' article from Big Hospitality? http://www.bighospitality.co.uk/Business/How-to-run-a-pop-up-restau...

Hi Mark & Lauren

I always refer my A3/A4 clients on to the Health & Safety Executive, I think most of the info you want will be on their website (see http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/cais11.pdf as a starting point) and their telephone helpline is excellent.  They have templates on their website to help you complete a risk assessment too.

You'll need to speak to your local Council about licensing; again you will find local-specific and general information about this on your local Council's website.

We can arrange short term insurance (www.popupspace.com/popupinsurance).

You'll find loads of useful stuff in the Empty Shops Toolkit at www.emptyshopsnetwork.com - under resources.
