This network might well extend beyond those delivering meanwhile activity on this high street, but I am sure that doesn't mean you haven't got opinions! Be good to get a sense from all you Meanwhilers what can be done to reinvigorate town centres. We'll co-ordinate responses and stitch it in with others to form a considered contribution for the Mary Portas Review.
So your top few ideas please. No surprises from my stance. Its fairly simple -use empty spaces to give people the chance to try things (e.g. could be trialling a new enterprise or a local history project) - brings some diversity back to the high street, can generate new enterprise, bring in new (or lost) audiences/users and explore alternative uses and inform future uses.
What do you think. Piece from Mary Portas' website below that sets the challenge.....
I have been challenged by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to undertake an independent review on the Future of the High Street – to help ‘bring back the bustle’ to our town centres.
And with town centre vacany rates doubling over the last two years, the need to take action to save our high streets has never been starker.
I am calling on business, local authorities and shoppers to contribute their ideas on how we can halt this decline in its tracks and create town centres that we can all be proud of.
If you’ve got something to say about the state of our high streets – be it an observation, insight, initiative or idea – click here to read through other peoples’ comments and to add your own contribution to the debate.
